4 Fun Things to Do in Oklahoma While You’re Working as a PRN or Travel Nurse

Oct 24, 2023

BOOMER! Today, we’re going to explore a lesser-known treasure trove of fun and excitement. We’re talking about the beautiful state of Oklahoma. While it may not be on everyone’s travel radar, this vibrant state has plenty to offer for those willing to venture off the beaten path. So, fasten your seatbelts as we dive into some of the most entertaining activities and attractions in Oklahoma!

Explore Nature

Oklahoma is blessed with diverse landscapes ranging from shimmering lakes to rolling hills and breathtaking canyons. Nestled within the state, you’ll find the magnificent Turner Falls, which is the largest waterfall in Oklahoma. Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit, as the crystal-clear waters are perfect for a refreshing dip.

If hiking is more your thing, head to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, where you can explore scenic trails and spot majestic Bison. Camping in the Wichita Mountains is a magical experience, especially if you go in September when the Elk are in mating season. At night, you can sit and listen to their beautiful calls as you fall asleep.

Pro tip: When I was growing up in Oklahoma, my family went to Turner Falls all the time. The water is almost always cold. So make sure you bring some warm clothes to change into. I also recommend water shoes because some of the rocks are sharp and slippery!

Indulge in the Arts and Culture

Oklahoma’s arts scene is sure to captivate your senses. In the heart of Tulsa, the Philbrook Museum of Art showcases an impressive collection of European, American, and Native American artworks. Don’t miss the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, known for its diverse exhibits and a fantastic rooftop terrace with panoramic city views. For a unique experience, catch a live performance at the Ballet or the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

During the summer, Oklahoma has a massive art show downtown where you can look at, and purchase art from around the country. There is always something for everyone, like learning how to make pottery or learning to paint. So, don’t miss out on any of the fun when the art show is in town.

Family-Friendly Fun

Looking for something to do with your little ones? Oklahoma has you covered! Head to the Science Museum Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, where kids can unleash their curiosity through interactive exhibits and hands-on experiments. The Oklahoma City Zoo is another must-visit, offering an up-close encounter with a wide variety of animals. For some outdoor fun, pack a picnic and spend a day at the Myriad Botanical Gardens, where your family can explore the beautiful gardens and take a peaceful stroll.

The Science Museum has something for everyone, and nothing is off-limits for your little ones. They have a giant jungle gym big enough for you to chase them in, allowing you to explore your inner child.

Savor the Culinary Delights

No travel experience is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. The food scene is a delightful blend of traditional favorites and modern twists. Don’t miss out on trying the mouthwatering Chicken Fried Steak from Kendals. Just remember, this hole-in-the-wall restaurant is cash only, so come prepared. After that, head over to Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Stores, a beloved local company known for its creamy ice cream and freshly baked treats.
